Vaultbreakers, an interesting MOBA-like title with extraction elements, is getting an investment from Square Enix to accelerate its development. The game is currently undergoing a new playtest from July 3 to July 9 and is described as a top-down, high-stakes adventure action RPG with PvE and PvPvE modes. Vaultbreakers comes from developer BetaDwarf, the team behind Forced and Minion Masters. According to the developer, the game had a very successful January playtest and, as a result, BetaDwarf has reprioritized its development roadmap based on community feedback. It’s now focused on Solo Queue and the PvE mode, with Solo Queue available in the current playtest. Players will have to wait for a few more months for the PvE-only mode, though.

Those interested in checking out the playtest before it ends on July 9 can get a key over at vaultbreakers.com. Other new features being tested include base customization, activable items, expanded perk options, itemization, Solo and Duo queue, and more unpredictable enemies.

I’m very interested to see how games like Wildgate and Vaultbreakers do in today’s market. The blend of extraction elements into existing genres like hero shooters and MOBAs could herald a new era of online PvPvE titles. Capcom’s Exoprimal wasn’t exactly a success, with support ending less than a year after its official release.

“Square Enix is always looking for high-quality games and talented development studios. When I played Vaultbreakers, I was genuinely excited by the experience of connecting with other players and exploring its rich game world.”, said Hideaki Uehara, General Manager, Business Development at Square Enix Holdings. “After visiting BetaDwarf and learning about the team’s mission and passion, we decided to invest in them to help realize their dream and bring this game to players around the world.”
