Stellar Blade developer Shift Up has completed the acquisition of Unbound, the Tokyo-based studio founded by legendary game designer Shinji Mikami. If you don’t recognize the name, you’ve definitely played his games. Mikami is the creator of the Resident Evil series, directed Resident Evil 4, produced Devil May Cry, and oversaw titles like Okami, Vanquish, and The Evil Within. His resume is pretty impressive.

Mikami founded Unbound after leaving Tango Gameworks in 2023, the studio he originally created in 2010 that went on to develop The Evil Within series, Ghostwire: Tokyo, and Hi-Fi Rush. Tango was later shut down by Microsoft in 2024 before being acquired by Krafton. Unbound is currently developing original PC and console IPs with a team of veteran developers, and Shift Up will handle publishing for the studio’s upcoming titles.

What makes this partnership interesting is the personal connection between the two CEOs. Shift Up’s Hyung-Tae Kim built his reputation through Goddess of Victory: Nikke and Stellar Blade, establishing the Korean developer as a serious player in the premium gaming space. Kim has said he grew up playing Mikami’s games, and their shared philosophy on creative direction and quality seems to be the foundation of this deal. Mikami, for his part, doesn’t sit in his own office at Unbound. He prefers to work at a desk alongside his team, which tells you everything you need to know about the kind of studio he’s building.

Mikami stated that he senses strong synergy with Kim as a fellow creator and called the partnership ideal for allowing the team to focus on creativity. He also hinted that he’ll be fully involved on-site working on a fairly large game, his first time doing so in a while. For Shift Up, the acquisition expands its console and PC pipeline and adds world-class development talent as the company looks to grow beyond its current portfolio. A branding video detailing the acquisition is available on Shift Up’s YouTube channel.
