Project Phoenix has appeared on Kickstarter, an ambitious squad-based, real-time strategy game heavily influenced by Japanese RPGs. What makes the project impressive is that it’s being headlined by some of the world’s most well-known talents including Kiyoshi Arai, Steffan Unger, and Nobuo Uematsu. The game is currently being developed mainly for PC and Mac for distribution through Steam and Creative Intelligence Arts, Inc.’s website. It does state on the Kickstarter that the iOS and Android versions will be different due to the platforms’ limitations, and that the Sony PlayStation 4 “and other platforms” are under consideration, but not confirmed.
The Kickstarter is already causing quite the discussion online, considering it’s asking for a small goal of $100,000 (relatively speaking) with such an impressive cast of talent on the team. According to CIA however, many of the members on the team aren’t taking salaries in helping develop the game, but rather royalties once the game is launched. So what’s the Kickstarter for? The $100,000 figure is the minimum cost required to create the 3D models for the game.
It’s an ambitious project and quite a different approach for the developers, who are all willing and able to sacrifice a salary in return for percentage-based royalties. Then again, some of the names in the roster are more than comfortable in their lifestyles thanks to successful hits such as the Final Fantasy series, Diablo III, and Halo 4. When you boast a team that has prior experience developing some of the world’s most popular AAA titles, you’re surely going to garner quite a bit of attention and criticism on the Internet.
As for the game itself, Project Phoenix didn’t reveal any gameplay in its teaser video on the Kickstarter page, which is a disappointment. But considering it’s more than met half its goal already, there’s plenty of gamers that are supporting this project. Of course expectations will be high and for an indie project that combines both Eastern and Western influences, the possibilities are endless.
