TThe upcoming God of War live adaptation has cast its lead, with Ryan Hurst playing Kratos. What’s a bit funny about this casting is that Hurst played Thor in God of War Ragnarök, which means he’s already familiar with the franchise and the character of Kratos. For many, he’s known for his work on Sons of Anarchy, but has also starred in The Mysterious Benedict Society, Desperation Road, The Walking Dead, and recently finished filming Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey.
The live-action series is coming from Prime Video, Sony Pictures Television, and Amazon MGM Studios, in association with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions. It will closely follow the story of the last two games, with a focus on the father-and-son dynamic with 10-year-old Atreus. That relationship will be the heartbeat of the new show, although we still don’t know who will be playing Atreus yet.
The series has already received a two-season order and pre-production is underway in Vancouver. Directing the first two episodes is Emmy Award-winning director Frederick E.O. Toye, who has also worked on Shōgun, The Boys, and Fallout. Ronald D. Moore serves as showrunner, executive producer, and writer. No word yet on when we can expect it to debut.
