Sony has reached a milestone of 40 million PlayStation 5 consoles sold to gamers since its launch in November 2020, as of the week ending July 16, 2023. This is despite production difficulties and console shortages during its launch, which were caused by the unprecedented challenges of a pandemic. Sony admitted that it took months for supply chains to normalize, in order to have the inventory to satisfy demand. To celebrate the milestone, Sony shared the top 40 PlayStation 5 games, as voted for by PlayStation players:
