Unit sales of the Nintendo Switch are understandably slowing down, with Nintendo reporting the console has now sold 152.12 million units, up from 150.86 million last quarter. Software sales for the Switch have reached 1.39 billion units, with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe continuing to lead the way at 68.2 million for first-party titles. The console still has a way to go to take over the PlayStation 2 at the top spot, which has sold over 160 million units in its lifetime.
As for the financial report, Nintendo had a year-on-year decline for the year ended March 31, 2025. Net sales fell by 30.3 percent to ¥1,164.9 billion. Much of that is attributed to weaker hardware and software sales for the Switch, which is to be expected since the Switch 2 launches on June 5, 2025. Hardware sell-in for the Switch fell 31.2 percent to 10.80 million units, while software sales saw a 22.2 percent drop to 155.41 million. Obviously, Nintendo expects it all to bounce back with the launch of the Switch 2. The company is forecasting that the Switch 2 will sell 15 million units in the full fiscal year ending March 2026, while the original Switch is expected to sell another 4.5 million units. As for software, Nintendo anticipates 45 million units for the Switch 2 and 105 million for the Switch.
Nintendo is also expanding its real-world footprint with a new store opening in San Francisco next week on May 15. Super Nintendo World at Universal Epic Universe opens to the public on May 22, while a live-action The Legend of Zelda film is confirmed for release on March 26, 2027.
