For the first time since PAX East was first created in 2010, Nintendo will not be having a presence at the event this year. The company has confirmed to Nintendo World Report that it will not be attending PAX East 2014 though a few eShop-friendly indie developers will be in attendance including Renegade Kid and Ackk Studios.

It’s an interesting move by the company during a crucial time where the Wii U sales continue to struggle, though the 3DS is doing just fine.

“Interacting directly with our fans and letting them play our games firsthand is a key component of our approach,” said Nintendo in a statement. “That doesn’t include PAX East this year, but we will offer our fans a variety of opportunities to get their hands on Nintendo products in 2014. Keep an eye on our social media pages for more information about where we’ll be and what you can play.”
