Nintendo has released system update version 22.0.0 for the Switch 2, and while most console updates are forgettable lists of bug fixes, this one actually has a few notable additions. The headline feature is Handheld Mode Boost, a new option buried in the system settings that allows compatible Switch software to run as if the console were docked in TV Mode. It’s worth noting this only applies to original Switch software running on the Switch 2, not native Switch 2 games.

Nintendo warns that enabling it may increase power consumption, and because it forces TV Mode operation, some touch screen functionality may not work, attached Joy-Con 2 controllers will be treated as a Pro Controller, and some on-screen instructions may be inaccurate. The effect will also vary by game, with some Switch titles seeing no difference at all. Still, for players who primarily play in handheld, this could be a meaningful visual upgrade for certain Switch titles.

The update also brings several quality-of-life improvements to GameChat, Nintendo’s voice chat feature. Players can now invite friends directly to GameChat rooms, even friends who haven’t completed the initial GameChat setup. The game screen shared during a GameChat session also looks better when expanded. Other welcome additions include the ability to save private notes about friends on your Friend List (the notes aren’t visible to them), a storage breakdown by data type so you can actually see what’s eating up your system memory or microSD Express card, and 10-second rewind and fast-forward controls when watching videos in News or the Nintendo eShop.

On the accessibility side, Portuguese (Portugal) and Russian have been added to GameChat’s voice-to-text languages, and the text-to-speech feature now works in the Album and during first-time setup. Parental Controls also got a useful update, with parents now able to receive a notification on their phone whenever the Parental Controls PIN is entered on the console. Airplane Mode has been improved as well, with the system now remembering your Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and NFC preferences when toggling it on and off.

The update is available now and should download automatically while the console is connected online.
