Nearly five years ago, Netflix and Ubisoft announced an agreement to create content based on the Assassin’s Creed franchise. At the time, the first series in development was slated to be a live-action adaptation, but it has only now been officially greenlit. In a statement on Ubisoft’s website, the developer confirmed Emmy nominees Robert Patino and David Wiener are on board as creators, showrunners, and executive producers. Patino is known for DMZ, Westworld, and Sons of Anarchy, while Wiener’s resume includes Halo, Homecoming, and The Killing.
Fans won’t be surprised to hear the live-action series will focus on the secret war between two shadowy factions—one intent on controlling humanity’s future through manipulation and another fighting to preserve free will. The series will follow characters across pivotal historical events, as the two factions fight to shape humanity’s destiny.
This isn’t the first time the Assassin’s Creed franchise has gotten a live-action adaptation. The 2016 Assassin’s Creed movie, starring Michael Fassbender, received a mixed reception. At least this project is finally moving forward, because many believed it was dead after its initial announcement in 2020.
Joining Patino and Wiener on the live-action adaptation are Gerard Guillemot, Margaret Boykin, and Austin Dill for Ubisoft Film & Television, as well as Matt O’Toole.
