Ubisoft and developer Screen Juice have launched Morbid Metal into Early Access on Steam for $17.99, with a 25 percent launch discount bringing the price down to $13.49 for the first week. We shared our first impressions of Morbid Metal recently, and the hack-and-slash roguelite has a lot of potential with its shapeshifting character system and stylish combat.

In Morbid Metal, players can switch seamlessly between three characters at any point during gameplay, once they’re all unlocked. Flux focuses on high single-target precision, Ekku brings heavy area devastation, and Vekta offers ranged battlefield control. Chaining their abilities together is where the combat really opens up, letting players discover new combos and push for those SSS ratings. The game is set within a post-apocalyptic simulation, and players progress through semi-procedurally generated levels across different environmental biomes, fighting through hordes of enemies and powerful bosses along the way.

At launch, the Early Access build features over 10 hours to finish the main path with infinite replayability, two biomes (Sublime Garden and Steel Sanctuary), 10 enemy archetypes with Elite variants, two final bosses, meta-progression through starting modifiers and persistent upgrades, and a training room. Screen Juice plans to deliver regular content updates throughout Early Access, so there’s more on the way.

What started as a prototype for a university application back in 2015 has grown into a full game with publisher backing from Ubisoft. If you’re into fast-paced action roguelites with combo-heavy combat, Morbid Metal is worth keeping an eye on. It’s currently available on PC with Xbox and PlayStation controller support.
