Mojang has locked in October 27 as the release date for Minecraft’s native Switch 2 version, putting a firm date on the announcement from June’s Nintendo Direct. The game has been playable on Switch 2 since launch through backward compatibility, but the native version is built to actually take advantage of the hardware.
Vibrant Visuals will be enabled as the default graphics setting on Switch 2, delivering the enhanced lighting and shadow effects the original Switch never supported. Mojang first rolled out the graphics overhaul in 2025, adding touches like directional lighting, volumetric fog, moving shadows, and reflective water to the blocky sandbox. Supported content in the Minecraft Marketplace gets the Vibrant Visuals treatment on Switch 2 as well. The upgrade does come with limits, though, as Mojang notes Vibrant Visuals is not available in some gameplay, including split-screen play and certain Marketplace worlds and content.
The Super Mario Mash-Up pack, exclusive to the Nintendo versions of Minecraft, is being updated to take full advantage of the new graphics. The pack brings a custom Mario-themed world, music, and unique skins, with locations like Peach’s castle and Delfino Plaza rebuilt inside Minecraft.
Players who already own Minecraft on Switch will have a digital upgrade path available, though Mojang has not shared pricing or timing details yet. The June announcement already confirmed that save data carries over from the Switch release, so existing worlds make the jump either way. The date also sets up a busy stretch for the franchise, landing four weeks after Minecraft Dungeons II arrives on September 29.
