The Metro franchise has now passed 50 million copies sold worldwide, 16 years after Metro 2033 first launched. To celebrate, 4A Games is releasing a free next-gen update for Metro 2033 Redux and Metro: Last Light Redux. The Metro Redux Next-Gen Update arrives on PC on October 22, followed by PlayStation 5 and XBOX Series X|S on October 29. Existing owners get it for free on PlayStation 5, XBOX Series X|S, and PC through Steam, the Epic Games Store, and the Windows Store. 4A Games says this isn’t a full remaster or remake, and the original look and feel of the 2014 Redux collection is being preserved.

Every version of the update includes 4K textures, improved animation fidelity, better audio quality, and more environmental detail, along with bug fixes and quality of life improvements requested by the community. On consoles, Metro Redux now runs natively on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Pro, and XBOX Series X|S, supporting true 4K at 60 FPS and upscaled 4K at 120 FPS on compatible TVs and monitors. Lighting, shadows, and particle effects are getting a quality boost too, with PSSR support on PlayStation 5 Pro, TSR upscaling and anti-aliasing on XBOX Series X, and spatial audio on XBOX platforms.

The update supports adaptive triggers on the DualSense and Impulse Triggers on XBOX controllers, and it adds XBOX Handheld and XBOX Play Anywhere support as well. Consoles also get hardware tessellation and displacement at runtime, plus Power Saver Mode on PlayStation and Power Optimized Mode on XBOX. On PC, players get DLSS, spatial audio, and 4K with uncapped frame rates, along with more community bug fixes and frequently requested improvements. 4A Games says full patch notes covering all the technical changes will be released at launch.

For those new to the series, the update arrives a few months before Metro 2039 launches on February 4, 2027, on PlayStation 5, XBOX Series X|S, and PC. Metro 2039 also won Best Visuals at the gamescom awards 2026 in August. Metro Redux joined PlayStation Plus Premium in September, though only on PlayStation 4, and at the time I called it a well-timed refresher with Metro 2039 due in February.
