We’ve known Marvel’s Wolverine was coming since the 2021 PlayStation Showcase, and the September 15 release date has been locked in since February. The one thing we still hadn’t really seen was the game in motion. Today’s State of Play fixed that, with Insomniac dropping an Extended Gameplay Trailer and confirming that preorders are live now.
The story follows Logan tailing a group of mutants who’ve been hunted down and captured by the Reavers, a cybernetic militia for hire. Their buyer is Bolivar Trask, a billionaire industrialist convinced that humans are the superior species. Jean Grey turns up as the emergent leader of the captured mutants, and Logan rejoins Team X, the mutant task force he walked away from three years earlier.
Combat is where the trailer spent most of its runtime, and it leans hard into brutal. Logan can stalk enemies, ambush from above, or shred straight through them, with special Techniques like the Tornado Spin and Bull Rush mixed in. Every hit, parry, and kill builds Rage, which fuels stronger attacks or kicks in his Healing Factor.

Push that Rage far enough and you trigger Rage Tier 3, a monochromatic, stylized rage state pulled from the look of Marvel’s Black, White, and Blood comics. Jean fights at Logan’s side with her telekinesis, and the two can chain into Critical Strikes, the tag-team finishers clearly built to be the highlight-reel moments. There’s even a highway set piece where Logan tears down the road on a motorcycle, slashing tires and hurling Reavers off the asphalt.
It’s clear Insomniac is really embracing the spirit of Wolverine. This is a long way from the wisecracking, friendly-neighborhood energy of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, and Insomniac swinging this dark and this violent is what makes this game my most anticipated of the year. The studio has the talent to pull it off and it looks like a blast to play.
Today’s State of Play confirmed Marvel’s Wolverine runs $69.99, with a $79.99 Digital Deluxe Edition that piles on extra cosmetic suits, claws, and a few more Technique Points. Preorders throw in the Classic Brown suit and a handful of other bonuses. Insomniac also mentioned a full slate of accessibility options at launch, which it described as a longstanding part of how it builds games.
The trailer ends on a run of teases, including a shot of Sabretooth. Marvel’s Wolverine lands on PlayStation 5 on September 15, with preorders open now.
