Mario Kart 8 has sold over 1.2-million units worldwide during its first weekend of availability, Nintendo has announced. The sales total includes copies sold in the Americas, Europe and Japan from May 29 to June 1. In addition, Nintendo has shared some sales data from previous instalments from the Mario Kart franchise, with the top-selling Mario Kart Wii having sold 35.53-million units in its lifetime. In second place is Mario Kart DS, which has sold 23.56-million units while Mario Kart 64 has sold 9.87-million copies.
“The early response to Mario Kart 8 demonstrates that the best days for Wii U are still ahead,” said Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime. “This year’s E3 is just days away, and it will be all about the future games for Nintendo platforms. This milestone is a great place to start!”
