John Carmack has officially resigned from id Software, likely to invest his time fully into his position of CTO at Oculus Rift. Carmack, who is the man responsible for bringing us revolutionary first-person shooter games such as Doom and Quake, was also the co-founder of id Software. It appears now however that he has a greater interest in cutting-edge hardware rather than software.

Carmack has always had a great interest in the technology Oculus Rift is looking to bring to the general consumer, being the first developer to actually integrate a prototype unit into a game. Originally in August, when Carmack first assumed the position of CTO at Oculus Rift, id Software announced that he would continue his role with the company.
