Gears of War: E-Day opened this year’s XBOX Games Showcase with its first gameplay and a release date, but the biggest headline came after the trailer. XBOX CEO Asha Sharma took the stage to confirm that E-Day will be an XBOX console exclusive, launching October 6. It will be available on XBOX Series X|S, XBOX on PC, and cloud, with a same-day Steam release, but it will not come to PlayStation.

The decision lines up with what many expected since Sharma took over from Phil Spencer, stepping back from the prior approach of bringing XBOX’s first-party games to rival platforms. It also follows community feedback, including through XBOX’s Player Voice portal, calling for a return to console-exclusive first-party titles. For a series long tied to the XBOX brand, it keeps one of the platform’s biggest franchises on its own hardware.

E-Day is an origin story rather than a direct sequel, a direction The Coalition first revealed at the 2024 showcase and built around the day the Locust first emerged on Sera. The entire game takes place in Kalona, a fictional city, across three days as Emergence Day tears it apart around the people who live there. Rather than an open world, the studio built Kalona as a single connected city, using the destruction of an everyday place to ground the scale of the event.

The campaign follows Bravo Squad and never leaves their perspective, with Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago returning, again voiced by John DiMaggio and Carlos Ferro. The two are young veterans recently home from the Pendulum Wars, attending an armistice memorial when the ground opens beneath the city. They are joined by two new playable characters in Mags Carter, voiced by Elizabeth Ludlow, a former Gear working at Kalona’s Imulsion Refinery, and Lucas Reyes, voiced by Jake Ryan Lozano, a young cadet and communications officer. Fan-favorite Tai Kaliso also returns, played by Maateiwarangi Heta-Morris, and novelist Karen Traviss, who wrote the Gears novel Aspho Fields, consulted on the story.

On the technical side, The Coalition rebuilt the game from scratch in Unreal Engine 5, with all-new assets and animation rather than anything carried over from past entries. For the first time in the series, players can jump, opening up vertical combat across rooftops and crumbling buildings, while a new slide from a sprint feeds into rebuilt cover that adds lower-ground options. Encounters open up from tight linear streets into wider districts, letting squads flank, climb, or push head-on, with E-holes, sinkholes, and destructible cover reshaping each fight.

The weapon set mixes returning staples with new tools, keeping the Gnasher for close range and the Longshot for precision at distance. New additions include the Gut Puncher, a grenade launcher firing armor-piercing rounds with player-controlled detonation, and the Incinerator, an Imulsion-fueled shotgun. The Chainsaw Lancer also gets an origin in E-Day, kit-bashed from a prototype on the front lines of the invasion.

Multiplayer returns with Horde Siege, a new 12-player PvE mode in which three squads defend Kalona across larger maps, reworking the Horde formula that debuted in Gears of War 2. A 4v4 Versus mode also comes back with new maps and a seasonal content roadmap, and The Coalition says more multiplayer details are on the way. Players can try it early during Open Beta weekends starting August 6, with first-weekend early access for anyone who preorders any version or subscribes to Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass.

Gears of War: E-Day launches October 6, twenty years after the original Gears of War, and arrives day one on Game Pass Ultimate. It will be available on XBOX Series X|S, XBOX on PC, and cloud as an XBOX Play Anywhere title, alongside a Steam release on PC.
