The number of rally racing games continues to shrink as the Codemasters WRC team at EA Sports has confirmed it has reached the end of the road working on WRC. The Hard Chargers Content pack will be the final expansion and for now, the team is pausing development plans on all future rally titles. EA Sports WRC won’t be delisted though, so players can continue buying and playing it for the foreseeable future. It’s a rather sad announcement though, since the Codemasters team was acquired by EA in 2021 and has since been slowly losing some of its franchises. The team is best known for its iconic racing games, including the DiRT series. It’ll be interesting to see what EA ends up doing with the F1 franchise.
Today’s announcement from the Codemasters team is likely also linked to a recent Bloomberg report of 300 to 400 layoffs at Electronic Arts. Jason Schreier reports that of those layoffs, around 100 were at Respawn, and an extraction shooter set in the Titanfall universe has been canceled.
