Final Fantasy isn’t the only franchise that’s enjoying a remake of its iconic seventh entry. Today, during the Nintendo Direct, Square Enix unveiled Dragon Quest VII Reimagined. A remake of 2000’s Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past, Dragon Quest VII Reimagined launches on February 5, 2026, on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch, Switch 2, and PC. Building on the original game, Dragon Quest VII Reimagined brings fresh visuals, refined gameplay, and tightened pacing to be the definitive way to experience the story.
The most obvious change is the gorgeous 3D art style, which takes the late Akira Toriyama’s character designs and brings them to life with a unique handcrafted, diorama-style aesthetic. To achieve the style, actual dolls were created in the real world. Along with the more streamlined story, the turn-based battle system has been significantly overhauled. The game delivers an updated vocation system with a “Moonlighting” mechanic that lets players use two vocations at once. There’s also a “Let Loose” ability that activates when a character gets worked up, and a new “Monster Master” vocation that adds the “Positive Reinforcement” perk, which summons monsters to assist the party. Square Enix has also added a host of quality-of-life improvements, including a redesigned UI for a smoother experience.
Dragon Quest VII originally launched in Japan in 2000 before heading to North America in 2001 on the original PlayStation. It was ported to the Nintendo 3DS in 2013 in Japan and in 2016 in the West.
