Blizzard Next-Gen Titan MMO Officially Canceled

According to a report from Polygon, Blizzard has canceled the development of its next-generation MMO title that was codenamed Titan. Last year, a report surfaced that Blizzard was going back to the drawing board on the game which has been in development for at least seven years. Though the project was never officially announced, the company has never been shy to talk about the game and according to Blizzard co-founder and CEO Mike Morhaime, the company “set out to make the most ambitious thing that you could possibly imagine. And it didn’t come together.”

Over the past decades, Blizzard has never shied away from canceling projects that didn’t live up to their standard of quality. Other titles that have been given the axe in the past include Warcraft Adventures and StarCraft Ghost. As a result, it appears that Blizzard won’t be developing a next-generation MMO at the current time and will likely continue to support World of Warcraft rather that investing into a new game. In addition, the success of Hearthstone has helped Blizzard realize that a game doesn’t have to be massive in scope in order to be fun. “Maybe we can be what we want to be and inspire groups around the company to experiment, get creative, think outside the box and take chances on things that just might thrill people,” said Chris Metzen, Blizzard’s senior vice president of story and franchise development, in an interview with Polygon. “Maybe they don’t have to be these colossal, summer blockbuster-type products.”
