Well, that didn’t take long. Black Myth: Wukong developer Game Science has already announced its next game, Black Myth: Zhong Kui. The company shared a cinematic teaser at Gamescom Opening Night Live 2025, revealing that the second entry in the series draws inspiration from the Chinese folk figure Zhong Kui. Game Science confirmed the project is still in early development, with no release window and no in-game footage available yet.
While it may feel a bit premature to announce a follow-up this quickly, I see it as a sign of how successful game development in China has become. The country has invested heavily in the gaming industry, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Black Myth: Zhong Kui arrives within the next three years. After all, Black Myth: Wukong has sold over 25 million copies, thanks to the massive player base in China. It went on to surpass three million concurrent players across all platforms and sold over 10 million copies just a few days after release. Game Science already had the team to deliver a solid debut title, and now it has the funds to scale production.
On the game’s official website, an FAQ addresses many of the questions we’re already asking. Game Science says it has become tradition to share progress with players every August 20, so it decided this was a good time to announce the new game. As for why it isn’t doing a direct sequel to Black Myth: Wukong first, the team said a new project gives it a chance to make refreshing changes and create new things while addressing past flaws and regrets. It also teased that Wukong’s journey won’t end here, so expect a sequel or DLC at some point in the future.
