Yesterday, Battlefield Studios and EA confirmed Battlefield REDSEC would arrive today, and it turns out it’s more than just a free-to-play Battle Royale. Battlefield REDSEC is actually meant to be a free-to-play destination built on Battlefield’s DNA, offering Battle Royale, Gauntlet, and Portal. The Battle Royale takes place in Fort Lyndon, with massive-scale destruction and fast-paced squad play. Gauntlet, meanwhile, is an all-new knockout-style elimination mode where squads race to complete missions. Then there’s Portal, a massive sandbox that lets players create their own experiences for free.

In a press release, EA revealed Fort Lyndon is Battlefield’s biggest map ever, and every bit of space is needed in the massive 100-player Battle Royale. Battlefield REDSEC is hoping to change up the Battle Royale genre with Tactical Destruction, allowing players to turn the environment into their own deadly weapon. As for Gauntlet, it’s a new fast-paced elimination mode that focuses on squad competition. A total of eight four-player squads compete in a series of round-based missions in a tournament-style format. Each round consists of five-minute windows for squads to complete their mission objectives. Then there’s Battlefield Portal, a toolset that lets players create or discover their own REDSEC experiences. Here, you can create an environment in which players can use only sledgehammers or host a headshot contest.

The arrival of Battlefield REDSEC coincides with the Season 1 launch for Battlefield 6, which brings the fight to Southern California with new seasonal content. Battlefield 6 Season 1 is broken up into three phases, with the first, Rogue Operations, launching today, October 28. It features three new weapons, a new map, a new close-quarters multiplayer mode called Strikepoint, and more. The new map, Blackwell Fields, is set in the arid shrublands of Southern California, while Strikepoint brings REDSEC’s gameplay into multiplayer with squad-focused, one-life experiences in 4v4 combat. There’s also the Rogue Operations Battle Pass, with 100 tiers, six total paths, and 10 prestige tiers. Also available today is a premium BF Pro tier and premium store content.

The remaining Season 1 content arrives on November 18 with California Resistance and on December 9 with Winter Offensive. California Resistance includes a new map set in the suburbs of Southern California and a new mode called Sabotage, where players must destroy as many sites as possible each round. Winter Offensive will focus on special seasonal content when it arrives.

Battlefield 6 is off to a hot start, setting records with over seven million units sold in the first three days. Now, with the addition of a free-to-play option in Battlefield REDSEC, Call of Duty might have some real competition again.
