Those who grew up gaming in the 1980s or 1990s will surely be excited about this announcement. Modus Games and developer Secret Base have announced Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise of the Dragons, heading to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Switch, and PC this summer. The cooperative beat ’em up returns the infamous tag team duo of Billy and Jimmy Lee, but adds modern roguelite elements to the classic formula. In total, players can choose from 13 unique playable characters to explore a variety of tag team abilities and strategies for devastating combos.

Billy and Jimmy Lee are joined by Marian, who is returning as a fully realized, firearm-wielding ranged fighter. There’s also newcomer Uncle Matin, a riot-shield-wielding powerhouse. Players can tag in and out as the classic Lee duo or change it up to experience the new characters.

To appeal to a new generation of gamers, Double Dragon Gaiden has a dynamic mission select feature. The order that players choose the missions will affect the mission length, number of enemies, and overall difficulty. Performing Special KO on opponents will earn players cash, while health boosts drop by performing Crowd Control moves. At the end of each stage, players can spend cash to unlock upgrades for their chosen characters.

When a playthrough is over, any remaining cash can be converted into tokens that can be used to permanently unlock extra characters and bonuses. Players will also have the option to buy a continue with that token to extend their current playthrough.
