A new version of Until Dawn, rebuilt in Unreal Engine 5, is launching on PlayStation 5 and PC on October 4, Ballistic Moon announced. Originally released in 2015, the interactive horror game captured the hearts of many and now an entirely new generation can experience it with updated visuals, character models, environments, interactable props, animations, and more. The entire game has been relit to take advantage of Unreal Engine 5’s rendering features, including ray tracing and enhanced materials. One focus of the team was revisiting the character models and using modern pre-rendering simulation techniques to create more realistic real-time fluids. Players will particularly see “all the gory glory” in the updated character deaths.

The game uses fixed and over-the-shoulder camera views to offer new perspectives to the haunting environment of Blackwood Mountain. This flexibility also allowed the team to place new emphasis on important moments in the game, while telling the story from a closer point of view of the characters.

While the original narrative of the game has been kept intact, Ballistic Moon adjusted parts of the Prologue for better pacing. Extra screen time has been given to the Washingtons, and some original scenes have been reframed. Players can also look for new collectibles throughout the game, including Hunger totems, a new type of totem that offers a different kind of vision from the others.

Finally, there are many new accessibility and usability settings so more players can enjoy Until Dawn. For those who are playing with third-party peripherals that do not have a gyroscope, there’s an alternative for the Don’t Move mechanic called Stay Calm. Players can also switch to this option if they want a different challenge.

Preorders for Until Dawn on PlayStation 5 and PC open on August 21. And yes, a PlayStation Network account is required to play the title on PC.
