As we approach the end of 2023, it’s clear this year will be one of the most memorable in gaming history. But it’s not over yet and there are still a few games worth playing as we close out the year. December might be slower in terms of new releases, which isn’t surprising given the abundance of amazing games that came out earlier this year. If you’re looking for something to play during the holidays, check out the games we’re planning to play in December.

SteamWorld Build

SteamWorld Build

If you’re a Game Pass subscriber, you can now access SteamWorld Build, the latest addition to the SteamWorld franchise. Offering a fresh perspective on the city builder genre, SteamWorld Build sets its scene in a lively SteamWorld town, drawing inspiration from the Old West. The game challenges players to maintain steambot happiness while engaging in activities like digging, resource production, and trading, all while searching for ancient technologies. Available from December 1, SteamWorld Build can be played on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Switch, and PC.

Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince

Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince

While it might not be the Dragon Quest title most gamers want, Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince brings its unique charm to the Switch as of December 1. In this game, players step into the role of Psaro, a character cursed and unable to harm anything with monster blood. To overcome this, Psaro becomes a Monster Wrangler, tasked with creating an army by hunting high-ranked monsters across Nadiria. This turn-based RPG features mechanics where players can recruit monsters to build their party, engage in arena battles, and even combine monsters to forge more formidable allies.

Disney Dreamlight Valley

Disney Dreamlight Valley

I debated whether or not to include Disney Dreamlight Valley, considering the game has been playable for quite some time now. The game officially launches on December 5, available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Switch, and PC. It’s a cozy life simulation game that borrows ideas from Animal Crossing and Stardew Valley, but there’s an entire story to follow featuring all your favorite Disney characters. It was originally supposed to be free-to-play, but that’s no longer the case.

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora

Ubisoft’s Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is set for release on December 7, available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Developed by Massive Entertainment, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora is expected to incorporate the familiar open-world formula of Ubisoft’s games, but expect some new concepts given this is the Avatar IP.

Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising

Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising

Launching on December 14 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC, Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising enters a year already packed with fighting game releases including major titles like Street Fighter VI and Mortal Kombat 1. The latest installment in the Granblue Fantasy Versus franchise is hoping to take the genre to new heights. Like Street Fighter VI, Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising will allow players to perform skills with the press of a single button. Of course, there will be a story campaign, along with a new one-of-a-kind island lobby packed with fun attractions.
