NieR creator Yoko Taro is as interesting as they come. The eccentric director is tied to Square Enix, but recently sat down with Atlus to share his impressions of the upcoming Metaphor: ReFantazio. Why would he do that, you’re asking? Well, that goes back to 2016, when Atlus first announced its fantasy RPG, which would later become Metaphor: ReFantazio. This was before NieR: Automata’s 2017 release, when Taro pleaded with Atlus not to make a fantasy RPG because it would kill off NieR.
Obviously, we now know how successful NieR: Automata became, selling over eight million units worldwide. The game also led to a popular anime series, and fans eagerly await what Yoko Taro will work on next—besides mobile games. With Metaphor: ReFantazio’s release around the corner on October 11, Atlus sat down with Yoko Taro to get his thoughts on the upcoming RPG and whether he still feels the same as he did in 2016.
The interview is classic Yoko Taro, if you’ve ever seen any of his previous interviews or conversations. The answers he gives are fairly light to avoid any sort of controversy, but it does appear, like many others, he’s excited for the upcoming game after playing the demo.
