Microsoft’s senior director of product management and planning at Xbox, Albert Panello, has confirmed that the Xbox One vertical orientation will not be supported and doing so is “at your own risk.”

According to Panello, it’s not a cooling program with the console placed in a vertical orientation but rather the Xbox One’s slot loading drive. The Xbox One was basically not designed to support both forms of placement.

The Xbox One vertical orientation not being supported is an interesting debate, considering the PlayStation 3 and the upcoming PlayStation 4 also have slot loading drives, and both those consoles support being oriented vertically. But it’s not so much damage to the console that gamers should be worried about, but rather damage to the game discs.

Which begs to ask the question, if the Xbox One was aiming to play all its games digitally, why would its orientation matter – if the sole reason is on the slot loading drive?
