Well that was quick. Microsoft Xbox Corporate Vice President Marc Whitten has confirmed that the company will allow indie publishers to self publish their games and that each console will double as a developer debug unit. That means each unit will also run in-progress game code, essentially allowing every Xbox One to be used for development purposes.

Whitten also announced that going forward with the Xbox One, developers can publish their own games. Unfortunately details to the program weren’t revealed at the time, with Microsoft clearly wanting to release a quick statement in order to address rumors and quickly appease indie developers who have recently taken to a dislike for the Xbox One’s publishing policies.

“Our vision is that every person can be a creator,” said Whitten in a statement. “That every Xbox One can be used for development. That every game and experience can take advantage of all of the features of Xbox One and Xbox LIVE. This means self-publishing. This means Kinect, the cloud, achievements. This means great discoverability on Xbox LIVE. We’ll have more details on the program and the timeline at gamescom in August.”
