Following news that the Sony PlayStation 4 won’t support external hard drives, at least not initially, Microsoft’s Larry “Major Nelson” Hryb has confirmed that the Xbox One won’t have external HD support at launch. The Xbox One however, will support it in the future it has been confirmed, while Sony currently has no plans to support the feature on the PlayStation 4.
The news comes during Major Nelson’s live podcast at PAX Prime 2013, with Hryb explaining that “The future plan is for definitely to support external storage much like we do on the Xbox 360,” he said. “My understanding is that feature will not be there at launch, because the team is working on some other things, but it definitely is on the list. I don’t know when it will come in though.”
The Xbox One will ship with a 500 GB internal hard drive, just like the Sony PlayStation 4. Thankfully, it will be a bit of time before those hard drives get completely filled by its users, but hopefully the feature comes along sooner rather than later.
