The Xbox One will be able to support up to eight wireless controllers at once, though we hardly expect many developers to crank out games with local eight-player support. While most games are moving towards online multiplayer and less focused on splitscreen co-op or even competitive modes, it’s a welcome addition to the Xbox One feature list that at the very least, it’s a possibility.

But let’s not forget that previous consoles have had support for up to eight controllers in the past, including the original PlayStation. Even the current-generation PlayStation 3 can support up to seven wireless controllers at a time – seven being an odd number due to limitations with Bluetooth technology.

Unfortunately very few developers have taken advantage of the support in the past, and that’s likely to remain unchanged for the future.

Update: Shuhei Yoshida has confirmed on Twitter that the Sony PlayStation 4 will only support up to four wireless controllers at once.
