XBOX is now testing a way to stream games you already own without paying for the service, though you’ll be watching ads to do it. Starting today, XBOX Insiders with an XBOX account can stream select games from their library for free during a limited-time test, with ads playing before each session begins. Sessions are capped at one hour across supported devices and regions, the core game experience is unchanged, and the whole thing is optional, so players can stick with other ways to play at any time.
If this does roll out to the general audience, it would mark a notable shift from how owned-game streaming has worked until now. Streaming games from your own library has been a Game Pass Ultimate perk since the feature launched in November 2024 with an initial batch of 50 titles, before expanding to XBOX Series X|S and XBOX One consoles in April 2025. The ad-supported test removes the subscription requirement entirely, at least for Insiders during the trial.
According to Microsoft, this as an access play more than anything else. The company points out that many players already own a device capable of streaming with XBOX, and that cloud streaming can help XBOX One owners play newer games built for XBOX Series X|S without buying new hardware right away, something it says matters most in regions where consoles are harder to find or less affordable. The company also laid out ground rules for how it plans to approach ad-supported services going forward, promising that ads won’t interrupt gameplay, will be held to the same quality bar as its content, and will be clearly labeled as advertising.
Insiders who want to weigh in on the test can share feedback through the XBOX player voice page, and anyone not yet in the program can join the XBOX Insider Program by downloading the XBOX Insider Hub on console or PC. Microsoft hasn’t said how long the test will run.
