Ubisoft has been relatively quiet throughout Gamescom 2025, but the company finally announced The Division 2: Survivors today. Described as an “updated take on the survival extraction experience” for The Division 2, the project is currently in early development. It is led by creative director Magnus Jansén, who has been with the franchise since the early days of The Division. Unfortunately, that’s all the information the team shared about the project.

“The Division 2: Survivors is as much your baby as it is ours, and we strive for transparency during its development. Clear communication and community involvement are a focus as we build the new experience, and we will be closely involving you as we move forward on the development journey,” said Julian Gerighty, executive producer.

While the extraction shooter genre has taken on a life of its own, 2016’s The Division planted the seeds for that style of gameplay. The Dark Zone was a PvP zone that required players to extract their loot, a process that took time and notified other players that an extraction was happening. Players could engage one another and steal loot before it was extracted. Back then, it was one of the most intense experiences we had as a group. Naturally, developers took that idea and evolved it into the extraction shooter genre we know today.

Ubisoft also provided a small update on The Division Resurgence, a free-to-play mobile game announced in 2022. Taking place in Manhattan a few months after the end of The Division, the mobile game is designed to bridge the narrative gap between The Division and The Division 2. More test phases are planned for September, starting with a closed test on iOS and Android to gather additional feedback and insights.
