So, maybe we haven’t broken the curse of terrible video game adaptations. This year’s Borderlands movie was a disaster, and the teaser for A Minecraft Movie doesn’t inspire much confidence. The thing is, the Minecraft franchise is so big that this movie will probably still make a billion dollars worldwide, even if it’s awful. I’m unsure about the movie’s aesthetic and don’t understand why they chose to go for realism.

A Minecraft Movie, set to release in 2025, is directed by Jared Hess, who is known for Ninety-Five Senses and Nacho Libre. The plot is centered around four misfits—Jason Momoa, Emma Myers, Sebastian Eugene Hansen, and Danielle Brooks—who find themselves pulled through a mysterious portal into the Overworld. In a quest to make it back home, the four will have to master the world along with Steve, who is played by Jack Black.
