Steam has released some specifications for its Steam Machines prototypes, with the hardware ranging anywhere from $600 to $2,000 if you were to build the box yourself. According to Valve, the 300 prototypes are shipping with various components, no doubt to test the low- and high-end ranges of each system.

Steam Machines Prototype GPUs:

  • NVidia Titan
  • GTX780
  • GTX760
  • GTX660

Steam Machines Prototype CPUs:

  • Intel i7-4770
  • Intel i5-4570
  • Intel i3

Steam Machines Prototype RAM:

  • 16GB DDR3-1600 (CPU)
  • 3GB GDDR5 (GPU)

Steam Machines Prototype Storage:

  • 1TB / 8GB Hybrid SSHD

Steam Machines Prototype Power Supply:

  • Internal 450w 80Plus Gold

Steam Machines Prototype Dimensions:

  • 12 inch x 12.4 inch x 2.9 inch

Unfortunately, no images of the prototype were revealed, but Valve promised that it will be sharing the CAD file for its enclosure so that people can either replicate it, or use it as a base to build off of it.

Steam Machines will undoubtedly have low-, mid- and high-range units available. It’s obvious that Valve is trying to see what’s the bare minimal for gamers to have an enjoyable experience in their living rooms while those that are willing to spend for the ultimate experience, can.

As a reminder, Steam Machines will run off SteamOS and will be able to use Valve’s Steam Controller that features dual trackpads.
