Today, the Triple-i Initiative Showcase revealed the long-awaited sequel to Slay the Spire. Developer Mega Crit has confirmed that Slay the Spire 2 is in development and will enter Early Access sometime in 2025. Although the reveal trailer didn’t show any gameplay, those who have spent hundreds, if not thousands, of hours in Slay the Spire will notice some familiar sights. We see Silent and Ironclad, as well as a new character called the Necrobinder. According to Mega Crit, the Necrobinder is “A wandering lich who seeks to bind the forgotten corpse. Calls upon her trusty left hand, Osty in combat.”

Slay the Spire arguably launched an entirely new genre by combining roguelite mechanics with deckbuilding. Since its release, there are dozens of games heavily inspired by Slay the Spire, including the popular Monster Train and the more recent Balatro.

The Steam listing confirms Slay the Spire 2 is being completely rewritten from the ground up in a new game engine, presumably Godot, given Mega Crit’s outspoken support for the engine last year during the whole Unity debacle. It may be a year away, but this is one title I’m very excited to play in 2025.
