Aspyr picked Hobbit Day to announce that Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor Game of the Year Edition and Middle-earth: Shadow of War Definitive Edition are coming to Switch 2 on September 30, marking the first time either game has been released on a Nintendo platform. Both were originally developed by Monolith Productions, the studio Warner Bros. shut down in February 2025, and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, with the story set between the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. The Switch 2 versions include all previously released DLC and bonus content, and they can be purchased individually or together as the Middle-earth: Shadow Bundle.
Digital preorders for all three options are open now with a 50 percent discount that runs through launch. The Middle-earth: Shadow Bundle is $34.99 during the preorder window, down from its $69.99 base price, while Shadow of Mordor Game of the Year Edition on its own is $9.99 instead of $19.99 and Shadow of War Definitive Edition is $24.99 instead of $49.99.
Shadow of Mordor Game of the Year Edition is built around the Nemesis System, which generates enemies that level up, adapt, and hold grudges specific to each player’s run, and it bundles the Lord of the Hunt and The Bright Lord campaign expansions, the Guardians of the Flaming Eye warband mission, and the bonus warband missions, runes, and skins that were released after launch. The Bright Lord expansion has players take on Sauron as Celebrimbor with the ability to wield the One Ring, while Lord of the Hunt is about hunting Mordor’s beasts and turning them against Sauron’s forces.
Shadow of War Definitive Edition includes the Sword of Dominion bonus weapon along with the Desolation of Mordor and Blade of Galadriel story expansions, which add Baranor and Eltariel as playable characters, plus the Slaughter Tribe and Outlaw Tribe Nemesis expansions. One thing to note is that this edition is optimized for offline play, so Online Conquests, Vendettas, Fight Pits, Chests, and Training Orders are unavailable, though the Garrison is fully playable offline and lets you reassign un-deployed Orc followers across regions.
These are the latest Lord of the Rings releases from Aspyr, following The Lord of the Rings: War in the North Legacy Edition, which launched last month, and the company says more classic releases from the franchise are on the way.
