August 2025 might be a bit slow in terms of major blockbuster releases, but PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium subscribers have a great collection of new games to look forward to when the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog lineup gets updated on August 19. Kicking off this month’s additions is Mortal Kombat 1 on PlayStation 5, the latest entry from the storied franchise. Following the events of Mortal Kombat 11, Mortal Kombat 1 is essentially a reboot of the series, as Fire God Liu Kang has created a New Era. It’s a great addition for those who still haven’t had a chance to check out Mortal Kombat 1 since its 2023 release.
For others, the much more exciting announcement is Marvel’s Spider-Man on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. This 2018 title from Insomniac Games was one of the year’s best, delivering one of the most authentic and fun Spider-Man experiences yet. PlayStation 5 owners get access to Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered, while PlayStation 4 players get Marvel’s Spider-Man: Game of the Year Edition.
Those looking for something more relaxing will want to check out the day one release, Sword of the Sea, on PlayStation 5. In this adventure, players surf waves of sand and glistening waters on a quest to restore a lost ocean while riding a Hoversword. Movement in the game is inspired by a combination of skateboarding and snowboarding and is packed with tricks, halfpipes, ramps, and wall rides.
Next on the list is Earth Defense Force 6 on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, which originally launched last year. As the latest entry in the third-person shooter series, Earth Defense Force 6 puts players in the role of an Earth Defense Force soldier battling against alien threats either solo or in co-op.

One game I can highly recommend in this month’s lineup is Vanillaware’s Unicorn Overlord on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. It was one of my favorite games of 2024 and in my review, I talked about how it delivered a modern version of the tactical RPGs I loved in the 1990s. While it doesn’t introduce anything groundbreaking, it polishes and fine-tunes existing systems for a new generation to enjoy.
PlayStation Plus subscribers can get their hands on Atelier Ryza 3: Alchemist of the End & the Secret Key on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 this month, part of one of gaming’s longest-running franchises. It’s Ryza’s final adventure, featuring 11 party members, including characters from previous games. Together, they set out to explore the Kark Isles, where they discover ruins with a huge gate and hear a voice telling Ryza to reach the Code of the Universe.
If you like story-driven games, Indika from developer Odd Meter is one of the most unique experiences you can have. Set in an alternative Russia at the turn of the 19th century, Indika tells the story of a young nun who sets off on a journey of self-discovery, accompanied by the devil himself. The game mixes storytelling and puzzle elements with 2D pixel art minigames.
Continuing with the narrative-focused games is Harold Halibut, which tells a story about friendship and life on a city-sized spaceship submerged in an alien ocean. Players live out the story of Harold, a young lab assistant to the ship’s lead scientist, Jeanne Mareaux, who is working tirelessly to find a way for the ship to leave the planet for a new home.
The final addition for all PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium subscribers is Coral Island on PlayStation 5. This cozy farming game lets players build the idyllic farm of their dreams, tending to crops, nurturing animals, and building a bond with the natural world. With more than 70 other people who call Coral Island home, there are plenty of relationships to form while helping revitalize the nearby town and its surrounding reefs.
PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers get access to two classic Resident Evil titles—Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3: Nemesis—on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. In addition, a five-hour Game Trial will be available for Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. I recently completed my journey through Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, and while I mostly enjoyed it, I found a few design choices surprising, which you can learn more about in my review.
