With Octopath Traveler 0 set to launch on December 4, 2025, a free three-hour demo is available today, with progress carrying over to the full game when it releases. While the announcement came during State of Play Japan, which officially confirms the demo for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, it’s likely it will be available on other platforms as well. The demo covers character creation, the opening prologue, and lets players experience the first chapter of multiple story arcs. Playtime is capped at three hours, though.

Octopath Traveler 0 is technically the third entry in the series, but the game is set prior to the events of the first game, hence the 0 in its name. Players return to Orsterra, the setting of the original Octopath Traveler, but it tells an unconnected story, so you don’t have to have played any other Octopath Traveler game to jump into the series now. Still, I’d recommend checking out the current entries, as they’re great RPGs with fantastic soundtracks. If you have save files on the same console for Octopath Traveler I, Octopath Traveler II, Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake, or Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, you’ll get useful items or customization items for your town in the full game.

Unlike Octopath Traveler and Octopath Traveler II, Octopath Traveler 0 tells the story of your protagonist, who sets out to find those who destroyed your hometown of Wishvale. Along with over 30 allies to recruit on the journey, players will also get to rebuild their town with buildings, decorations, and more. Combat revolves around strategic turn-based battles with up to eight party members at a time.

Originally announced during July’s Nintendo Direct, the main story of Octopath Traveler 0 builds on the mobile game Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent. It adds story content with town-building, along with reinterpreted story beats throughout. The game will be available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch, Switch 2, and PC.
