Nintendo has announced its first quarter earnings, noting that 160,000 Wii U consoles sold worldwide from April through June 2013, with 60,000 of those consoles sold in America. 90,000 Wii U units were sold in Japan, while the remaining 10,000 were sold elsewhere worldwide. Those figures are put into perspective when you consider the Wii sold 210,000 units worldwide over the same period of time.

Things are looking up for the Wii U console however, with plenty of first-party titles in the pipeline and Pikmin 3 getting released this weekend. Total Wii U sales tally up to 3.61-million units worldwide while the Wii has sold over 100-million units in its lifetime. As for the 3DS, it continues to be strong in the market with 1.14-million units sold in the first quarter, but even more impressively, 11.4-million games were sold over the same period of time.

It appears that the Wii U will enter the same life cycle that the 3DS did. The 3DS had a rough start, much like the Wii U, but with the recent addition of first-party titles, its sales have started to blossom. It’s safe to say that Nintendo will turn the corner with its Wii U once the familiar franchises such as Zelda and Mario Kart make an appearance on the system.
