Believe it or not, Donkey Kong has never had his own dedicated LEGO theme. That’s about to change. The Nintendo Today! app pushed a short teaser earlier today under an “Adults Welcome” banner, with a brick barrel rolling across a wooden tabletop, the LEGO and Nintendo logos, and the words “Rolling Soon.” That’s it. No release date, no pricing, no image of the actual set.
DK has appeared in LEGO Super Mario sets going all the way back to 2023’s expansion lineup, with treehouse and minecart sets built around the existing interactive Mario figure platform. This is different though. The “Adults Welcome” framing is LEGO’s standard label for its 18+ Icons collector line, which is where you’ll find sets like the LEGO Nintendo Entertainment System, the original Game Boy, and the LEGO PAC-MAN Arcade.
I can’t help but hope the upcoming set is similar to the PAC-MAN Arcade set. That launched in 2023 as a brick recreation of the 1980 cabinet, complete with a working crank that animates Pac-Man chomping through a maze. With a barrel rolling animation as the teaser’s centerpiece, it doesn’t take much imagination to land on a similar recreation of the 1981 Donkey Kong arcade cabinet, with construction-site barrels you can roll down the girders. I have no inside info here, but that’s what the teaser has me believing.
Rumors of a LEGO Donkey Kong arcade cabinet have been floating around for months, with some pointing to an August launch window. The timing also lines up with the wave of momentum the Donkey Kong brand has been riding since Donkey Kong Bananza launched on Switch 2 last summer. Nintendo has clearly been investing in the character again, and a LEGO Icons-tier set would slot right into that broader push.
