Despite its best efforts, Nintendo will finally develop mobile games, partnering with DeNA to produce new Nintendo IP specifically optimized for smartphones and tablets. So rather than porting existing Wii U and 3DS games, Nintendo will be released entirely new titles on mobile platforms. The company will likely use existing IP as well, including its iconic Mario and company as a way to introduce younger gamers to the brand. The two companies also announced that they are planning the development of an online membership service that will work on mobile devices, PC and Nintendo systems.

During the press conference where Nintendo revealed its entry into the mobile gaming market, president Satoru Iwata also shared that the company is working on its next system that has been codenamed “NX.” Iwata confirmed the development of the next “dedicated game platform” and promises to share more information on it next year.

“In order to create completely new game experiences for smart devices, all Nintendo IP will be eligible for development and exploration by the alliance,” reads the statement. “As these consumers enjoy the unique kind of gameplay found only with Nintendo, they will have the opportunity to explore even more premium experiences on Nintendo’s dedicated video game platforms.”
