Though Nintendo still has no plans on entering the mobile games category, a recent report says that the company is working on a smartphone app that will bring Mii avatars outside of Nintendo’s games. Speaking to Japan’s Nikkei business daily, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said, “It would be fun for players to use their Mii characters as icon on social media.” He then confirmed that the company is developing an application that would allow users to do just that and the app will be officially announced later this year.

While details are light, it is expected that the app won’t be robust and feature-filled but will likely find a way to connect to Nintendo’s servers so that you can show off your Mii and its accomplishments. The company remains adamant against developing smartphone games and will continue to focus on its hardware and first-party titles.

“In the past, I have opposed making smartphone and tablet versions of Nintendo titles,” said Iwata in the same interview. “Prices for content aimed at smartphones and tablets are falling quickly. I am still wary of the category.”
