Leading up to Sony’s E3 2016 press conference, it was rumored that a new God of War game would make an appearance. And so it did, and it’s totally different than what many expected. Santa Monica Studio’s new God of War, which is heading to the PlayStation 4, isn’t the fast-paced, action-packed button-masher that you remember. Instead, the company has changed the formula greatly for a new generation.

“I realized early on that we had to make changes in every aspect of the game,” said Cory Barlog of Sony Santa Monica Studios. “I knew I didn’t want to simply reboot the franchise, starting over with a retelling of the origin story. I wanted to reimagine the gameplay, give players a fresh perspective and a new tactile experience while delving deeper into the emotional journey of Kratos to explore the compelling drama that unfolds when an immortal demigod makes a decision to change.”

So what better way to transform the franchise than to introduce a child for Kratos? The new gameplay trailer shown off during the PlayStation press conference at E3 2016 gives a glimpse into what Sony Santa Monica Studios is working on and it looks promising, albeit quite different.
