The developers behind the recently released Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew have announced that the game will be the company’s last title. In a blog post, Mimimi Games co-founders Dominik Abé and Johannes Roth said the decision came down to the fact that dedicating the past 15 years of their lives working on “increasingly ambitious games took a heavy personal toll” on them and their families. They decided after the release of Shadow Gambit that it was the right time to prioritize their well-being and shutter the studio.
The plan is to slowly ramp down the studio over the next few months, but it will continue to fully support Shadow Gambit; a patch is currently in development for all platforms, and a significant content update is planned for later this year. The company also mentioned that, thanks to the recent launch of Shadow Gambit, they were able to distribute bonuses to all employees to assist them during the transition.
Along with Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew, Mimimi has released games such as Shadow Tactics: Aiko’s Choice, Desperados III, Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun, The Last Tinker: City of Colors, and daWindci. The indie studio started in 2008 in Munich, Germany.
“Making these games was amazing and extremely taxing at the same time. Reaching the level of quality Mimimi strives for is hard and requires focus and dedication,” detailed the blog post. “We also have to acknowledge that our future production costs are growing faster than potential revenues of our genre. The increased financial pressure and level of risk became unsustainable. Additionally, whenever our games got close to release and were finally fun to play, a new fight for funding of the following projects started, making this a continuous cycle.”
