Skydance New Media and Marvel Games have unveiled a story trailer for the upcoming game, Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra, during Epic Games’ State of Unreal showcase at the Game Developers Conference (GDC). This game will feature an original story that centers on Captain America and Azzuri, the Black Panther of the 1940s. The two will have to overcome their differences, forming an alliance to deal with their common enemy. Joining Captain America and the Black Panther are Gabriel Jones of the Howling Commandos and Nanali, a Wakandan spy in Occupied Paris.
While the premise sounds fairly generic, even for a superhero game, the team at Skydance New Media is led by Amy Hennig, who served as the Creative Director and Lead Writer of the Uncharted series. The quality of the story trailer is so impressive it could be mistaken for a Marvel movie trailer, showcasing the capabilities of Unreal Engine 5.4. If you have any doubts, this is what Hennig had to say: “All the sequences you just saw in that trailer are pulled right out of our game, running real time in Unreal Engine 5. No smoke and mirrors.”
Then again, we’ve heard claims like this before from developers that ultimately proved to be false. For now, we’ll have to wait until 2025 to see just how accurate Hennig’s statement really is.
