Yo-kai Watch hasn’t had a mainline release outside Japan since Yo-kai Watch 3 reached North America in early 2019, and today’s Nintendo Direct put an end to that with Yo-kai Watch 2: Haunted Domain, a Switch 2 remake of the 2014 Nintendo 3DS sequel. Level-5 confirmed development on social media alongside the reveal, saying it’s keeping everything that made Yo-kai Watch 2 special while completely revamping the graphics, and it’s also working on new story content and new Yo-kai. Unfortunately, there’s no release window.
The original Yo-kai Watch 2 shipped as two versions, Bony Spirits and Fleshy Souls, before a third, Psychic Specters, added more story and characters. Nintendo’s description references all three by name, which reads as though Haunted Domain rolls the split versions into a single game, though neither Nintendo nor Level-5 has said so outright. The teaser shown during the Direct was brief, with Nate walking down a street with Jibanyan before Whisper flies in to join them, and it didn’t show any of the new content.
The series has been in an odd spot in the West for years. Yo-kai Watch 4 launched in Japan in 2019 and never made it over, and the various Switch re-releases of the earlier games stayed in Japan as well, so Haunted Domain is the first Yo-kai Watch game with a confirmed Western release in more than seven years. Level-5 says additional details will be shared in the future.
