RS4 is the working title for an entirely new RuneScape MMORPG that Jagex revealed at RuneFest 2026, and it’s being built in Unreal Engine. Jagex says RS4 isn’t necessarily the final name, but it works for now since this is the studio’s fourth-generation RuneScape project. The game is still a few years away, and Jagex says it chose to reveal it this early because it wants to bring players into the development process from the beginning by sharing ideas, testing things, and listening to feedback along the way.
Jagex made a point of clarifying that RS4 isn’t a replacement for RuneScape, Old School RuneScape, or RuneScape: Dragonwilds, which all have their own dedicated teams, roadmaps, and continued investment. RS4 is designed to sit alongside them as another way to experience Gielinor, with Jagex building on the tech it developed for Dragonwilds and the community co-development approach of RuneScape and Old School. Integrity and permanent progression will be central to its design, though Jagex says it’s too early to talk about platforms, accounts, membership, combat, skills, or when players can actually try it. The studio plans to share more next year, including how players can start getting involved.
RS4 is set in Gielinor during the Sixth Age, and it begins in Ashenfall, the northeastern landmass first explored in Dragonwilds. The story takes place years after the events of Dragonwilds, whose 1.0 release in September added a boss fight against the Dragon Queen Kuldra to conclude that storyline, and Jagex plans to expand beyond Ashenfall into familiar and new parts of Gielinor over time. We spent about 20 hours in Ashenfall for our Dragonwilds first impressions back in April 2025, and while we admitted we weren’t big RuneScape fans going in, I semi-jokingly called it Valheim 2.0 with a prettier coat of paint.
