Hytale’s first major content drop finally has a vision, as game director Simon Collins-Laflamme has detailed Chapter 1 in what he calls the biggest blog post in the game’s history, spanning over 4,000 words and more than 20 videos. The team has shipped weekly updates since Early Access launched on January 13, but new content was deliberately held back while it rebuilt tools and caught up on a codebase that sat abandoned for over four years before Hypixel reacquired the game from Riot Games. Collins-Laflamme is upfront about where things stand, admitting there “aren’t many reasons to come back and play Hytale right now.” Chapter 1 aims to address that and it’s targeting to release in the next two to three months.
The biggest addition is Hytale’s first handcrafted dungeon, capped by the game’s first multi-phase boss fight. Both run on the Encounter Manager, a system that coordinates phases, wave spawns, and arena changes, and since encounters are authored as content rather than engine code, players will be able to build their own. The goblin faction is the focus of the chapter, with goblins coming in different shapes, sizes, roles, and personalities, including elites like the Feastmaster, who calls in reinforcements mid-fight. Not every goblin wants you dead either, as some are friendly and one even runs a shop.

Your journey starts at the Forgotten Temple, which will serve as an evolving hub across the Early Access chapters. Once the chapter’s opening call is answered, a new world event called the Goblin Breach can trigger, opening a temporary portal into an unstable fragment of Orbis overrun by goblins and a growing Void presence. The area regenerates every time you enter, and the Void eventually forces you back out, so the goal is to explore and grab as much loot as you can before getting kicked out. The goblin world has its own activities too, including trackable predators, Void assassins that hunt you down, trapped treasure chests, and puzzles.
Goblins are tinkerers, so their gadgets end up in your hands, with rocket boots, a mechanical hookshot, a glider, a mining drill, and a spyglass all in the works. Boats are coming as well, which have nothing to do with goblins, but recent movement system upgrades made them easy enough to add. Chapter 1 also introduces carryable objects like chests and explosive barrels, with plans to eventually let you pick up downed friends in co-op using the same mechanic.

One of the bigger new systems is runes, which grant your Avatar active combat abilities on dedicated E and R inputs. Ability runes decide what you get, while modifier runes change how it behaves, so a Fireball might split into multiple projectiles or apply a shock debuff depending on your setup. Elements react to each other as well, letting you soak an enemy with water and then shock it, or fire a fireball into a friend’s tornado to create a flaming tornado. Chapter 1 starts with roughly six ability runes and a similar number of modifiers, with a full Runeforging system coming later.
You won’t have to wait months for everything, though, as Update 6 arrives in the next two to three weeks with spectator mode, Hardcore worlds, and the in-game Mod Browser. Hardcore is pure permadeath, meaning death drops everything you’re carrying and turns you into a spectator for the rest of the run. The Mod Browser lets you browse, install, and update mods without leaving the game, and Hypixel confirmed there will be no paid mods, with a planned rewards ecosystem where players can support mods and receive official cosmetics in return while everything stays free to access. New player physics also shipped to prerelease today, letting Avatars ride moving entities and opening the door to parkour built around moving platforms.

Hytale is getting its first experience outside of Exploration and Creative as well: a collection of 14 fast party minigames, each lasting 60 to 120 seconds, with a dedicated Minigames tab planned so you can be in a lobby with friends within seconds. Hypixel is sharing the code and assets behind all of them, along with developer libraries shaped by 13 years of running the Hypixel Minecraft server for over 45 million unique players.
Under the hood, the engine is moving to cubic chunks that load the world around players instead of full vertical columns, unlocking effectively infinite world height and depth for servers and minigames. WorldGen V2 is being built on graph-based generation, starting with more advanced procedural caves before expanding into procedural dungeons, villages, rivers, and roads, and the level design team working on it has doubled in size. Real transparency support means stained glass and window blocks are finally possible, volumetric clouds are being experimented with, and a crafting rework featuring home Companions who handle busywork is slated for Chapter 2.
