Last year, classic DOOM and DOOM II received enhanced versions, and this year Heretic + Hexen got a similar treatment. This definitive re-release, developed by id Software and Nightdive Studios, brings the mid-1990s classics into the modern era. Raven Software created the original Heretic and Hexen using a modified DOOM engine, introducing inventory systems, vertical aiming, and character classes to the first-person shooter genre.
The Heretic + Hexen package includes Heretic: Shadow of the Serpent Riders, Hexen: Beyond Heretic, Hexen: Deathkings of the Dark Citadel, and two all-new episodes—Heretic: Faith Renewed and Hexen: Vestiges of Grandeur—that were created in collaboration between individuals at id Software and Nightdive Studios. In total, players get access to 117 campaign maps and 120 deathmatch maps.
Enhancements include online cross-platform deathmatch and co-op for up to 16 players; local split-screen modes for up to eight players; community mod support; accessibility options; widescreen and multilanguage support; and more. All titles in the package can be enjoyed at up to 4K resolution and 120 FPS.
Heretic + Hexen is available for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Switch, and PC. Owners of any original game versions will receive the new remastered bundle for free.
