Recently, several developers announced that it’d be moving off the Games for Windows Live (GFWL) platform in exchange for Steam, spurring rumors that perhaps Microsoft had intentions of shutting down its online game service. It appears those rumors could be true, as earlier today, the Age of Empires Online page had the text: “Games for Windows Live will be discontinued on July 1, 2014. Although it is available through Steam, Age of Empires Online requires features of the Games for Windows Live service. You can continue to enjoy all the features of Age of Empires Online as the service will remain 100% operational until July 1, 2014 when the server sill shut down.”
Of course, the text was removed, though screenshots were captured and posted all over the Internet. With all the recent news of developers moving from GFWL to Steam, this rumor has merit. But until it’s confirmed by Microsoft, it’s best to be cautious about purchasing games off the GFWL service.
