The team behind Frostpunk and Frostpunk 2, 11 bit studios, has announced Frostpunk 1886. Set to launch sometime in 2027, the original Frostpunk is being rebuilt using Unreal Engine and will include new content, refined mechanics, and visual upgrades. According to the team, while it was working on Frostpunk 2, it realized how much the experience of the original could be improved using Unreal Engine. The first Frostpunk was limited by 11 bit studios’ in-house Liquid Engine, prompting the team to rebuild the game using Unreal Engine to deliver a richer, more immersive experience. Veteran players can look forward to a brand-new Purpose Path, in addition to the existing Faith and Order paths. Rebuilding the game in Unreal Engine will also enable mod support.
For those unfamiliar with the Frostpunk series, the games blend strategy with city-building and survival elements. Both games are set in a post-apocalyptic world, where players manage the citizens of Earth’s last city. Frostpunk 2 launched in September 2024 as a follow-up to 2018’s Frostpunk, quickly becoming profitable. The team shared a roadmap in November 2024 and remains committed to the game despite the development of Frostpunk 1886.
